ISLANDS is the artistic research graduation exhibition of the MA Performing Public Space class of 2025. The interdisciplinary showcase presents selected samples of PPS artists’ research projects in the form of image, video, performance and participatory installation. The Fontys Academy of the Arts Kapel serves as a backdrop for interactive possibilities to emerge. The exhibition features projects that imagine our shared grounds otherwise, drawing on topics such as gender, identity, social divisions, space and time in contemporary societies. ISLANDS proposes the (re)creation of multiple micro-worlds of resistance to dominant narratives. These temporary worlds are imagined as spaces of experimentation, emancipation and solidarity, responses to the need for fundamental social change. They emerge as concepts and practices reflecting the essence of Performing Public Space. Drawing from the concept of radical affection as an act of ‘individual and collective imagination through which new axes of caring, connection and resilience might be forged’ (Strauss, 2021), our islands invite viewers to inhabit them and enter a dialogue on alternative ways of co-existing.
